ENGINE

Engine Fire, Severe Damage or Separation:

Engine fire, severe damage or separation

Thrust lever                                                                                 CLOSE                                                                        Captain

Start lever                                                                                   CUTOFF                                                                      Captain

Engine Fire Switch                                                                    PULL                                                                            F/E

If engine fire switch remains illuminated:

        Fire bottle                                                                           DISCHARGE                                                               F/E

Autothrottle (if engaged)                                                            DISENGAGE                                                                Captain

After 30 seconds, if fire switch remains illuminated:

Other Fire Bottle                                                                         DISCHARGE                                                                 F/E

If high airframe vibration occurs and continues after engine is shutdown:

Without delay, reduce airspeed and descend to a safe altitude which results in an acceptable vibration level.  If high vibration returns and further airspeed reduction and descent is not practical, increasing airspeed may reduce the vibration.

Autothrottle (if desired)                                                               RE-ENGAGE                                                                Captain

If fire continues:

  • Do not lower flaps or use speed brakes unless emergency landing is imminent.
  • Land at the nearest suitable airport.

Volcanic Ash

Caution:    Exit volcanic ash as quickly as possible.  Consider a 180 degree turn.

If engines not recovered:

        Start levers affected engines                                            CUTOFF

When EGT starts to decrease                                                   IDLE

If EGT rises rapidly approaching EGT start limit:

Start levers affected engines                                             CUTOFF, THEN IDLE
